In 2017 and 2024, counterfeit and uncertified products flooded the market, putting consumers at serious risk of permanent eye damage.
American AS identified glasses from undisclosed Chinese factories that carried other manufacturer names — e.g., “American Paper Optics” without an address — as counterfeits, meaning unauthorized copies. Only some of these turned out to be safe. [March 2024, AAS.org]
Rick Fienberg (AAS Solar Eclipse Task Force) received a report of thousands of glasses purchased through a distributor previously approved by AAS — the glasses were as bright as regular sunglasses, and AAS now classified them as true “fakes”, not just counterfeits. [April 2024, Scientific American]
Fake eclipse glasses from China were flagged as potentially harmful and could cause temporary vision damage or permanent blindness. They imitate legitimate products but are not dark enough and may carry fake ISO certifications. [April 2024, nypost.com]
